Use of a torsion error correction system during LASIK surgery may reduce residual astigmatism, according to a contralateral eye study.

In the study, 48 eyes of 24 patients underwent LASIK surgery using the NIDEK Advanced Vision Excimer laser platform (NAVEX), with half of the eyes receiving the treatment with active cyclotorsion error correction. Preoperatively, manifest refraction spherical equivalent was –3.59 D (range: –1.25 D to –6.75 D) for treated eyes compared with –3.82 (range: –1.38 to –8.63) for nontreated eyes.

At 3 months, visual acuity was equivalent between the two groups, but treated eyes had significantly lower cylinder (0.28 D) vs. nontreated eyes (0.49 D).

"We found that using the NAVEX platform with active torsion error correction statistically significantly increases the predictability of astigmatism correction and higher order aberration correction during laser vision correction," the study authors wrote.
