BERLIN — The Crystalens HD (Bausch & Lomb/eyeonics) was introduced here at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons annual meeting after having received its CE mark in August.

"Instead of just moving forward, [Crystalens HD] actually arcs and its optic ... is actually very powerful in terms of providing more focusing for near," Sheraz Daya, MD, said during a Bausch & Lomb sponsored event. "And since it moves, you've got 100% of light rays falling on the retina. There's no compromise in terms of contrast sensitivity and there's no issue of halos and glare also."

Dr. Daya presented data on 104 patients who received the Crystalens HD in procedures performed by inexperienced surgeons. Of these patients, 47% never needed glasses with 81% never needing them for distance and 59% never needing them for near, he said. In his personal experience with 20 patients, Dr. Daya, who is experienced in implanting previous versions of the Crystalens IOL, 95% of patients no longer required glasses for distance vision, 80% no longer required them for near vision and 75% needed no glasses at all.

"We really look forward to the launch here in Europe because we are absolutely convinced that this will be the leadership product certainly in the premium IOL market," Gerald M. Ostrov, chairman and CEO of Bausch & Lomb, said.
